About
My name is Anne Smith and I teach composition full-time in Newport, RI.
I have designed my tutoring program so that it resembles private education; there is academic rigor, individual attention, detailed feedback, and open communication with parents/guardians. I limit the number of students I tutor each academic year and summer vacation. Unlike other tutors who tutor upwards of 100 hours a month, I only take on 6-7 students during the academic year and 14-15 students during the summer. Each student receives materials that are privately hosted on my website as well as an educational approach that is directly tailored to their needs, current abilities, and academic goals, which I assess during my free initial consultation.

I graduated Summa cum laude from Bridgewater State University in 2015 with Commonwealth Honors and my Bachelor's in English Education. I was also awarded my teaching license by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. I immediately began teaching English at St. John Paul II School in Hyannis, MA, where I taught all course levels (College Preparatory, Honors, Pre-AP, and AP) and all high school grade levels (9-12) in various combinations over the years. I returned to Bridgewater State University for further study and graduated in 2019 with my Master's in English Literature & Film. My graduate coursework even took me to the University of Oxford, where I studied the Inklings at Wadham College. In 2024, I transitioned from the secondary education classroom to the higher education classroom, where I am now teaching composition. The highlights of my secondary education teaching schedule were Pre-AP English, AP Capstone (Seminar and Research), and AP Literature. My higher education course in composition focuses on research-based writing, literature studies, and the writing portfolio. The highlights of my professional development are The Modern Classroom Project and the AP Summer Institutes at St. Johnsbury Academy and Bridgewater State University. I have also served as an AP Reader since 2019.
I began tutoring during the COVID-19 pandemic after observing a massive need for both remedial education and intensive AP exam preparation. Because COVID-19 necessitated that students seek tutoring online, I came to realize that I could share my knowledge and skills with students from all around the country, not just within my 50-mile radius. Some of the students on my roster Zoomed from states as far afield as California, Ohio, Texas, and Florida. AP Capstone tutoring and mentoring remains one of my most requested services, and I continue offering virtual tutoring via Google Meet.
